Great disagreement about the gambling sector
Other politicians in the country still advocate legalizing casinos. These include Vice President Hamilton Mourão and the Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies, Rodrigo Maia.
In the recent past, both have increasingly advocated that two or three casino resorts should be built at strategic locations in the country in order to improve the regional and macroeconomic situation.
The chairman of the Brazilian Institute for Legal Gambling (IJL), on the other hand, does not go far enough in legalizing casinos. In February, he told the press:
The Chamber of Deputies is completely wrong about their approach to legalizing gambling. If you just legalize integrated casino resorts, control will not be easier, it will not increase the number of foreign tourists, it will not create as many jobs and will not generate real tax revenues of 20 million reals.
The establishment of only two integrated casino resorts could generate a maximum tax income of 2 million real (equivalent to 359,800 euros). However, the country’s potential is much higher if other forms of gambling are legalized nationwide.
However, given the president’s current rejection, the prospect seems to be waning. It remains to be seen whether there will be at least one or two casinos in the country.
