Addabbo hoped to convince Cuomo that the additional revenue from regulated mobile sports betting could be used to deal with the economic effects of the corona virus.
It is possible that the senator’s advance could have been made at the wrong time. New York is severely affected by the spread of the coronavirus. Mobile online sports betting may not have been relevant enough for the governor to make a decision.
New York needs additional income
But Senator Addabbo, chair of the Racing, Games and Betting Committee, said alternative sources of income would have become more important right now.
The measures against the spread of Covid-19 and the associated falling tax revenues could put considerable pressure on the economic situation.
New York is already struggling with a budget deficit of $6 billion. Addabbo therefore reacted with incomprehension to the governor’s decision and said:
“It’s amazing that we had sales needs before the virus crisis and are still being asked to cut healthcare. Incredible. Completely irresponsible. “
Senators continue to fight for mobile sports betting in New York
Addabbo said he would continue to work to legalize mobile sports betting, even if it currently seems hopeless. The senator further commented that mobile sports betting in New York was not a question of “whether” but “when”, since the money was urgently needed.
“We will have to consider all credible revenue options regardless of concerns. We should examine both mobile sports betting and the three casino licenses as the need for current and future earnings is obvious. ”
Addabbo said he would see what would be in the final budget. Accordingly, he would develop a strategy to move forward. But he would not give up.
