“The Last Dance” features Michael Jordan’s last season at the Chicago Bulls, which ended in 1998 when he won the NBA championship. Back then, the team looked after by master trainer Phil Jackson and alongside Jordan with stars like Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman had a highly acclaimed title hat trick.
Jordan’s goal at the time was one of the city’s casinos, in the lobby of which the player was spotted around 2:30 a.m. Critics later accused him of irresponsible behavior because he looked tired and unconcentrated in the field the following day.
According to Michel Jordan, the allegations at the time are baseless. In the TV documentary, he said:
We had a limousine, played for a few hours and then drove back. Then everyone freaked out. It wasn’t late. We came back around 0:30 a.m.
Gambling instead of presidential dinner
However, the Atlantic City episode was not the first of its kind. After the championship won two years earlier, Jordan had skipped a reception by US President George Bush at the White House.
It turned out that instead he gambled with James Bouler, who was later convicted of fraud and money laundering. Investigators found a $ 57,000 check signed by Jordan for his losses during the game when Bouler was arrested the following year.
For Jordan, however, such amounts were probably only small change, because the assets of the ex-athlete are estimated at USD 2.1 billion. A few million lost in gambling should not be of great importance.
